Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) is the unexplained death, usually during sleep, of an apparently healthy baby under one year of age.

SIDS is sometimes called cradle death because infants often die in their crib. Researchers have discovered some factors that could put babies at an additional risk. They also identified steps you can take to help protect your child from SIDS. Perhaps the most important thing is to place your baby on his back to sleep.

A Nigerian doctor identified on Twitter as Dr. Chinonso Egemba listed the different ways a baby can die suddenly. He referred to the situation as "sudden infant death syndrome", as noted above.

In a tweet, the doctor listed the different means and precautionary measures to take to avoid such deaths.

He wrote: "A baby can die suddenly, this is called sudden infant death.

Do not use pillows, blankets, duvets, etc. in your baby's sleeping area and move all these objects away from your baby's face.

They should also not sleep on mattresses or sofas for adults, only in their cribs.

DO NOT place babies on their stomachs to sleep. Put them on their backs to sleep, this helps reduce the chances of sudden infant death syndrome.

Babies can be placed on their stomachs when they are awake and playing and someone is watching them. A baby lying on his stomach to sleep may choke!

Especially when there are extra clothes that could enter their airways while they sleep.

So the baby's crib should be empty! Bed bedding should be adjusted to the bed and not be easy to wrinkle. This part is important.

The position on the stomach is the position that presents the greatest RISK of baby dying suddenly. In addition, the side position is not a safe alternative because it is unstable and babies can easily roll on their stomachs."
