The bank's origins date back to 1967 when the Tanzanian Government nationalized all financial institutions, including banks. The banking industry saw amendments in 1991, and by 2000, South African financial services group Absa Group Limited had acquired a majority stake in NBC.
The Tanzanian Government maintains a 30% shareholding, while the International Finance Corporation (IFC), a member of the World Bank Group, holds a 15% share.
