INTERNAL PhD STUDY POSITION
The National Institute for Medical Research (NIMR) is a Parastatal Organization established by an Act of Parliament No. 23 of 1979 (CAP.59, R.E.2002) and became operational in 1980. NIMR-Mwanza Research Centre (MMRC) is one of the NIMR Centers located in Mwanza The Centre is currently conducting research on HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as well as other diseases of public health importance. The National Institute for Medical Research is looking for the qualified, experienced and well-motivated personnel to apply for PhD studies opportunity under the PARENT APP Project. Duty station will be at NIMR Mwanza Centre.
PARENT APP FOR EARLY YEARS PROJECT: NIMR is collaborating with the University of Oxford, UK and University of Stellenbosch, South Africa to conduct feasibility individual randomised controlled trial of ParentApp for the Early Years, which will operate as three linked sub-studies, each recruiting caregivers with children from three different age groups, (third trimester of pregnancy-9months; 10months-4yrs11mo; 5years-9years) with aligned design and measures. Data will be collected to provide insight into the level and patterns of engagement with the app, as well as potential barriers and facilitators to participation and engagement. This study will provide insight into how parenting programmes can be delivered over digital platforms to reach vulnerable parents, and families, that does not require costly resources or complex logistics. The study is being conducted in Dar es Salaam region.
POSITION: PhD STUDIES (1 POST)
REPORTING: The student will report to the Project Investigator (PI)
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- To support a broad range of research activities on the ParentApp for Early years Tanzania Intervention development, piloting and RCT, such as literature reviews, data collection, data management and processing; II. To support project management;
- To collect data in the field;
- To conduct data cleaning and analysis;
- To report regularly to the project PI on the progress of the research and undertake such other tasks as may reasonably be expected;
- To prepare reports and other documentation for academic and non-academic audiences; and
- To perform any other related duties as may be assigned by the Supervisor.
QUALIFICATION AND COMPETENCE:
- A Masters qualification in Public Health, Epidemiology, Education, Sociology, Anthropology, Social Work, Psychology;
- Experience in evidence-based research, digital interventions, parenting and/or child development using quantitative methods;
- Demonstrable commitment to improving the life of children affected by abuse and poverty;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in both English and Kiswahili;
- To work as part of a multidisciplinary research team; and
- Computer literacy
TERMS OF ENGAGEMENT FOR THE POSTS:
One (1) year contract which may be renewed on the basis of performance and mutual agreement.
DUTY STATION:
The successful candidate will be based at NIMR-Mwanza Centre.
A project stipend will be offered as per the project budget.
